James worked as a wagonmaker. He did carpentry work and eventually became a cabinetmaker.
Rosabelle died in 1898 at the age of 39.

After James retired from carpentry, he worked as a gardener. He and Mary did not have any children.

James died of pneumonia and valvular heart disease at the age of 88 years, 9 months and 29 days.
He was survived by his third wife, Mary; and 2 sons.
Funeral services were conducted on 13 Nov 1943.
