Bernard John Krekeler Jr Biography

Bernard John Krekeler was born December 29, 1866. His father, Bernard Krekeler Sr (1822-1892), lived in Lohne, Germany, and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, December 6, 1847. Bernard Sr was 25 years old when he arrived at the Port of Baltimore. Bernard Jr’s mother, Elizabeth Siemer Krekeler (1830-1872) lived in Oldenburg, Germany, and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland September 1845. Both Bernard John’s parents, Bernard Sr and Elizabeth, crossed the Atlantic aboard a clipper ship, identified as a barque ship, which housed about 166 people. The ship had three large center masts and multiple smaller masts. The trip from the Port of Bremen, Germany, to Baltimore took at best 3 weeks and at worst as long as 3 months.

Bernard was born in Enochnsburg, Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana. He was the 8th child of his mother’s 9 children by Bernard Sr. Bernard’s step-mother, Mary Anna Lennermohle Krueger (1835-1905) had 3 children by Bernard Sr. Altogether, Bernard Jr grew up with eleven brothers and sisters. Bernard’s closest playmates were his brother Franklin (1862-1934), his sister Henrietta (1865-1940) and his brother Anthony (1869-1930). Bernard Jr was only 6 years and 6 months old when his mother, Elizabeth, died on June 8, 1872. Bernard Jr’s younger brother, Anthony, was just three years old when they lost their mother.

Bernard Krekeler Sr married Mary Anna Lennermohle Krueger (1835-1905) on February 11, 1873. Mary Anna had three children by Bernard Sr. Their household as of the 1880 Census held the following members with their ages: Bernard Sr (aka Barny) 57, Mary Anna 44, Henry 25, Joseph 22, Louisa 20, Mary 19, Therisa 19, Franklin 18, Henrietta 15, Bernard Jr (aka Barnie) 14, Anthony 12, Mary Ann Geneva 7, Adaline 4 and Mary 1.

As of the 1880 Census, Bernard Sr, was a farmer, Henry was a Minister, Joseph was a laborer, Louisa and Mary were servants, Henrietta worked at home and Bernard Jr and Anthony worked on a farm.

Bernard Jr married Louise Gertrude Kunkemoeller (1870-1942) in 1892. Louise was the daughter of Johan Heinrich Kunkemoeller (1825-1897) and Maria Louise Hofhues Kunkemoeller (1829-1901). Louise and her parents immigrated to the United States in 1881 when she was eleven years of age. The Kunkemoeller family previously lived in Hanover, Germany.

Once married, Bernard Jr and Louise, found a house at 199 Rohman Street on the corner of Shelby Street in Bromley, Kentucky. It was at this house their first four children were born: Mary, Bernard, Herman and Frank. Bernard was 26 years old when his first child, Mary Gertrude, was born. Anna Louise was 22 years old when she had Mary Gertrude. Before 1910, Bernard moved his family to 158 Oak Street in Ludlow, Kenton County, Kentucky. (Prior to 1930, 158 Oak Street was re-numbered to 458 Oak Street.) Between 1910 and 1926, they had three more children.

Bernard Jr and Louise had a total of seven children as follows: Mary Gertrude (1892-1974), Bernard Henry (1895-1961), Herman Bernard (1897-1968), Frank Anthony (1899-1969), Louise (1902-1926), Raymond (1905-1971) and Irene Edna (1914-2003).

Bernard Jr was a harness maker and worked for a harness business from about 1892 into the 1920s.

It was in June 25, 1915, when Bernard was about 50 years old, that he and his friend, Henry Pillen, who lived on West Linden Street in Ludlow, left for a trip to see Niagara Falls, New York, and then out to the East Coast.

Bernard Jr made generous donations to the Catholic Church and Catholic Schools in the greater Cincinnati, Tri-state area. He enjoyed patronizing the various activities at St. Xavier University including Homecoming Weeks and plays at the school.

Bernard had eight grandchildren that he loved and enjoyed in his lifetime. Mary Gertrude, his first daughter, had three children: Bernard Esterkamp Jr (1919-2010), Mary Lorrain Esterkamp (1922-1980) and Anna Esterkamp (1924-). Bernard Henry, Bernard Jr’s first son and second child, had three children: Edward Bernard (1918-1993), Bernard Molique (1922-1983) and Ann Mary (1926-1933). Herman had 2 children prior to Bernard Jr’s passing: Rita Louise (1923-2006) and Claude Bernard (1928-1983).

Bernard had additional grandchildren, after he passed away. Bernard Jr’s son Herman had two additional sons: Jerome (1929-2010) and Paul Franklin (1932-2001). Frank Anthony had one son, William Krekeler (1931-). Irene had one daughter, Joan Ossenbeck (1939-). Based on this author’s information, Bernard Jr had a total of twelve grandchildren. It was fortunate that he had the opportunity to know eight of them before he passed.

In Bernard’s life, after losing his mother at age 6, he also lost three other people he loved dearly. It was November 1892, after his marriage to Anna Louise, Bernard Jr lost his father, Bernard Sr. Bernard Sr died at his home in Enochsburg, Indiana where Bernard Jr’s brother, Anthony, lived nearby. It wasn’t until 34 years later, on April 30, 1926, when Bernard lost another family member, his daughter, Louise who was only 24 years of age. She lost her young life to tuberculosis. Later that year he saw the death of his older brother, Joseph (B-1858 – D-Sept. 11,1926).

Bernard John Krekeler Jr died Saturday, January 5th, 1929. Bernard Jr had suffered with a right lung infection for about a year. He was 62 years of age at the time of his death. There was a Requiem High Mass at St. Boniface Church. Bernard Jr was buried at St. Joseph Old Cemetery in Price Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio.

His wife Louise Gertrude Kunkemoeller Krekeler continued to live at their home at 458 Oak Street in Ludlow Kentucky with her daughter Irene. Louise died March 31, 1942. She is buried next to her husband, Bernard John Krekeler Jr. at St. Joseph Old Cemetery in Price Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio.
