Alfred Lee "A.L." McIlheran, 81

July 26, 1893 ~ April 23, 1975

Alfred Lee was born in Oak, Nebraska July 26, 1893 to Edith (Ford) and Rev. Samuel McIlheran.

On June 5, 1917, this tall, slender young man walked into the World War I draft office in Carrolton, Illinois. He was working as a dry goods clerk in Carrolton.

On May 27, 1918, he was drafted into the US Army, and fought in World War I until he was honorably discharged February 12, 1919.

He married Ruth Harrison, and they were blessed with 2 children.

In 1940, the McIlherans were living at 719 E. 3rd, Monmouth, Illinois, where her husband was a secretary for the local YMCA. Edith McIlheran, 77, her husband's widowed mother, was living with them, and had been at least since 1935, at the same address.

On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and the USA entered World War II. On April 27, 1942, A.L. presented himself at the draft office. He was still living the same house in Monmouth, Illinois, and his hair was still brown, but the registrar described A.L. as being stout, and of a ruddy complexion.

Later, A.L. and Ruth moved to Blair, Nebraska.

Mrs. Ruth McIlheran’s Death Follows Husband’s by 3 Months

Word has just been received that Mrs. A.L. McIlheran (Ruth) passed away at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha during the first week in July. She had moved to Fremont in June where she planned to make her home.

Mr. McIlheran had died suddenly in his home in Mesa, Arizona, on April 23rd.

Their bodies were cremated and distributed over the desert in Arizona.

They are survived by a son, Robert McIlheran in Fremont and a daughter, Mrs. Stack Samuelson (Jean) of Osceola, Iowa, and four grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. McIlheran were well known in Blair. They owned and operated the B & C Shop before retiring and moving to Arizona. Both were very active in the Blair Methodist Church.

On annual Sidewalk Sales, the owners converted the main store into one large changing area for women, screening off the shop windows, while racks of clothing were out on the sidewalk. Steady streams of women came into the store, sharing mirrors. What didn’t look good on one lady would look well on another, and sales were brisk.
