John Gifford Skelton was born on December 12th, 1882 in the Windsor Farms section of Richmond, Virginia. His father was John Gifford Skelton Jr from Richmond, and his mother was Lucy C. (Landrum) Skelton of Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended Brown University and worked as an electrical engineer for the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad company. He was also connected with Norfolk and Southern. He married Catherine Downey Hagan, also of Richmond, and they had two daughters: Catherine and Jane. Both John and his wife Catherine were charter members of the Country Club of Virginia, where he enjoyed playing golf. In his later years he remarried to Gertrude Gentry and he died on October 18th, 1959 at his home in Richmond. His last words were: "Let's get up a game of bridge".
