Ruth Brown
Birth: Jan. 30, 1928
Death: Nov. 17, 2006

R&B Singer, Actress. She attained rhythm-and-blues stardom in the 1950s with hits such as "Lucky Lips", "Teardrops in My Eyes," "5-10-15 Hours" and "(Mama) and He Treats Your Daughter Mean". Her soulful voice later won her a grammy and produced dozens of hits for Atlantic Records, cementing the then-fledgling record label's reputation as an R&B powerhouse. In 1993 she was elected into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. As an actress she starred in low-budget films including the camp classic "Hairspray" (1988), and in 1989 won a Tony award for Best Actress in a musical for "Black and Blue" that was later made into a TV movie of the same title. (bio by: Noni)
