He was born on Dec. 3, 1922, in Denver, Colo., to Joseph Hayes and Monica Nagel-Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was a resident of the area since 1955 and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Grants since 1956. He married his wife Velma E. Leffler-Hayes on June 5, 1955, and was employed at United Nuclear/Homestake Partners as a mill worker. When he retired from the uranium mines, Mr. Hayes worked as a carpenter in his spare time. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church who served and contributed greatly to the Christian community's welfare. He was remembered as a great father who had a terrific sense of humor.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife of 51 years Velma Hayes of the family home in Milan; his son David Ward and wife Anne of Stevensville, Mont.; his six sisters Phyllis Spencer and husband Dan of Milan and Nevada, Robin Nichols and husband David of The Woodlands, Texas, Glennie Young of Kingman, Ariz., Cleo Delaney of Cripple Creek, Colo., Dixie Naico and husband Kenneth of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and April Simonson of Chloride, N.M.; his son-in-law Clark Stauffer; 25 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Hayes and Monica Nagel-Hayes; his daughter Joan Stauffer; his brothers Joseph Hayes and Loren "Red" Hayes and his sister Thelma Burbridge.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, at Grants Mortuary. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at First United Methodist Church, 510 N. First Street, Grants, with Pastor Reuben S. Thomas officiating. Interment and graveside services will follow at Grants Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dan Spencer, David Nichols, Donald Spencer, Dustin Spencer, Sammy Lynn and Bruce Lynn. Honorary pallbearers will include Marvin Ryder, Clark Stauffer, Fred Nielson and Kenny Naico.
Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
