Born in Yorkshire, England, Harris came to America with his parents, 2 brothers and 1 sister in 1880. His family was in the textile business and in his late teens, Harris studied at the Philadelphia School of Textiles. He and his brothers ran the family mill, Clear Springs Worsted, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania with their father Crossley Holmes. Harris was accomplished in design of woolen cloth.
He was active in the Republican Party and served on the Borough Council. He was a Mason, a member of Odd-Fellows, Rotary and St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
In 1917, he married Nora Pflieger of Perkasie and together they had 2 daughters, Alta and Janet.
