At the age of 23 he became the Postmaster in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Was associated with several newpapers in Las Vegas, including the Las Vegas OPTIC

in 1899 Charles and Lila moved to El Paso, Texas, where Charles was associated with the El Paso Herald. He also had a curio shop.

In 1905, the Allens moved to Bisbee, Arizona, where started the Standard Furniture Company. Charles and his brother built the Allen Block in Bisbee--the first area of office buildings in Bisbee.

Charles was a member of the B.P.O.E Elks, the Odd Fellows and Rotary.
