Hazel Proffitt Ownby, age 98, of Knoxville, entered Heaven on April 28th following a brief illness. She was a resident of South Knoxville for over 75 years. A graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Tennessee, she was a teacher in the Knox County School System for over 30 years serving at High Bluff, New Hopewell, and Doyle Middle School. Hazel was a long time member of Meridian Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Howard Ownby; parents, Joe and Inda Fox Proffitt; sister, Sara Sheffey; granddaughter, Robin Hook. She is survived by sons, Steve (Sharon) and Phillip (Cindy); grandchildren, Brian (Diane) Ownby, Heather Ownby (Dustin Booth), Matthew Ownby (Steven Hardison), Andrea Canter (Bronson Netherly), Lauren (Kevin) Teesateskie; and six great-grandchildren. Special thanks to caregivers Theresa, Kim, Mary, Virginia and Karen.
Family will receive friends on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 5:00- 6:30 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at Berry's Funeral Home on Chapman Highway. Family and friends will meet Tuesday May 2, 2017 at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service. Rev. Dana Fachman officiating.
