BATESVILLE - Robert Michael "Robbie" Langley, 30, died Saturday, October 21, 2006, at The Med in Memphis.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Mississippi in Oxford. Rev. Kevin Crofford and Rev. Barry Male will officiate. Burial will be at Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at the Ford Center. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Langley was employed with the University of Mississippi Police Department serving with the K-9 Unit and was a U.S. Army National Guard serviceman.
He joined Galloway United Methodist Church at the age of 12 and was very active in church activities.
On January 30, 2005, he rededicated his life to the Lord at Sardis Lake Baptist Church in Batesville.
He graduated from Madison Ridgeland Academy, Madison in 1995. While he attended MRA he joined the ROTC. As a junior in high school he joined the National Guard.
He was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and played football and ran track while a student at MRA. While on the track team he won the state championship in both the 100-meter dash and the high jump. Langley also was an avid soccer and baseball player.
After graduation he attended Valley Forge Military College in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania for one year, and then transferred to Delta State University. At both Valley Forge and DSU he played football as a running back. Later, he received his mortuary science degree from Northwest Community College.
He was an avid bass fisherman and outdoorsman. Langley was musically inclined and could play any musical instrument.
Following a brief career in the funeral business, he went to work for the University of Mississippi Grounds Dept. for several years. In April of 2002 he began his career in law enforcement with the University of Mississippi Police Department. In February of 2005 he was called to active duty with the 114th Battalion from New Albany. He served his country for 14 months in Afghanistan and upon returning from the middle east he rejoined the U of M Police Dept. where he was then promoted to the K-9 Unit.
When England's Prince Edward visited the Ole Miss campus last year, Langley was chosen to be his personal bodyguard.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Rusty Langley; great-grandparents Lottie Mae Hunt and Whitnell Bridges of Carthage and foster grandparents H.K. and Lois Van Every and Paul Tardy.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Bryant Langley of Batesville; two sons, Robert "Robbie" Michael Langley Jr. of Oxford and Cory Bridges Langley of Batesville; two step-daughters, Maci Cheyenne Kirkland of Batesville and Anne Claire Bufkin of Oxford; one sister, Racheal Langley of Kosciusko; one step-sister, Renee Howell of Carthage; one step-brother, Chris Watkins of Pearl; two foster brothers, Jonathan Van Every and Kelsay Van Every, both of Brandon; his father, Larry Langley of Lena and step-mother, Sherry Donald Langley of Lena; his mother, Debbie Hearn Lloyd and step-father, Michael Lloyd, both of Covington, La.; his foster parents, Eugene and Paula Van Every of Brandon; his grandparents, Glenda Bridges Kuhn of Batesville, Cecil Langley of Vicksburg, Jannie Foster Hearn of Covington, La. and James T. Hearn of Hammond, La.; his step-grandmother, Mary Langley of Vicksburg; his foster grandmother, Virginia Tardy of Cleveland and his mother and father-in-law, Henry and Linda Bryant of Batesville.

He was air lifted to the Med in Memphis where his condition deteriorated. His wife had to make the decision to turn off the machines. She laid her hand on his chest and felt his last heartbeats of this life.

As Officer Langley was speaking to the driver, a university student whom he had stopped for speeding, the driver suddenly sped off, dragging Officer Langley approximately 200 yards.
Officer Langley was flown to the Memphis Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect was apprehended at his residence by members of the Oxford Police Department a short time after the incident and charged with capital murder of a police officer. In 2007 the suspect plead guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
