Born in Maryland, Lee Slaughter, at the age of 19, enlisted on Sept. 6, 1813 in Denton, Caroline County, Maryland, as a Sergeant in the 14th US Infantry under the command of Capt. James McDonald. Family lore says that he fought with Andrew Jackson during the Creek Indian Wars of 1813-1814. In 1815, the 14th Maryland Infantry was consolidated with other Regiments to form the 4th Infantry, under the command of Capt. Reuben Gilders. Lee was promoted to 2nd Lieut. April 18, 1818 and 1st Lieut. April 30, 1819, while on duty at Pensacola and Amelia Island. Lieut. Slaughter served as Regiment Quartermaster Oct 10, 1819 to June 1 1821, while on duty at Traders Hill, Ga., Blakely, and cantonment "Montpelier".

It's likely during this time that he met Mary Ann Harris, whom he married on June 28, 1821 in Baldwin County, Alabama. He continued his military service as Quartermaster of Co. "D" at Camp Barrancas, Fla. He was transferred to Co. "B" in 1822 before resigning Jan.1, 1823. Descendants state that his "payment for service" was land at Montpelier, Baldwin Co, Alabama, site of the Regiment's encampment.

"After his retirement from the Army, he acted in various civil and public capacities, Sheriff of the county, and a representative in the Legislature of his adopted State" [1843 Obituary]

He is buried by his wife Mary, and four of their ten children at Montpelier.
