Son of Joshua Buckmaster and Mary Ann Adams Buckmaster, brother to Amanda Rebecca Buckmaster and Sadie Buckmaster.

Frederick Buckmaster first enlisted in Co. E, 15th Iowa Infantry, Nov 12, 1861, for a term of 3 years. He claimed residence in Keosauqua.

He transfered to Co. K on Febuary 1, 1862 by the order of Col. Dewey. His physical description was as follows: age; 18, height; 5'6-1/2", complexion; dark, eyes; hazel, hair; brown, where born; Holmes Co. Ohio, occupation; farmer.

On Jan 1, 1864, he re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer, and was mustered in Jan 1, 1864 in Vicksburg, Miss. He was captured in Battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864. He was a prisoner of war at Andersonville, and died there of diarrhea, Sept 9, 1864. He is mentioned in the Atwater Death lists, and in a letter from Clara Barton (now property of Andersonville National Cemetery). He is buried in grave #8265. His name appears on a monument to the soldiers from Iowa who gave their lives in the war.
