Jack Sterling Merrifield, Sr., age 80, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016. Mr. Merrifield served in the United States Army in Korea, and later in the United States Air Force for 18 ½ years as an aircraft mechanic with the Strategic Air Command. He also served in the 577 Ballistic Missile Squadron at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, and with the 89th Special Missions Wing.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Jean Merrifield, and his parents, James and Lucille Sterling. Survivors: wife, Gayle Merrifield; son, Jack Sterling Merrifield, Jr. and wife Diana; daughters, Sylvia Wohlfort and husband Mark, Teresa Merrifield, Sharon Merrifield, Charity Mitchell and husband Shane, and Christy Merrifield-Stoffell; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; step-son, David Kagley; aunts, Virginia Shelton and Ernestine Bright; special friend, Diane Tweed and Godchild Destiny Tweed.

Funeral service 7:00 PM, Wednesday in Atchley's Seymour Chapel with Rev. Scot Wells and Rev. Becky Milligan officiating. Interment 11:30 AM, Thursday in East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery (John Sevier Highway) with military honors provided by American Legion Post #104. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM, Wednesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Seymour, 122 Peacock Court, Seymour, TN. Online condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com.
