Rhondalynn G. Brown

Rhondalynn departed for her next adventure on June 10, 2016. A multifaceted personality, she traveled many paths during her 68 years. Rhondalynn was a free spirit, a parent, a musician, a Vietnam veteran, a neighborhood crusader, a junior executive with a knack for technology, an entrepreneur, a student, a teacher, a rancher, a friend with a heart of gold.

After many years in the business world in Indiana, Rhondalynn found her true calling as a teacher and subsequently moved to Arizona, where she taught social studies in the Navajo Nation. She was adopted by the Kinyaa’aanii Clan of the Dine and spent her retirement on her small ranch where she delighted her friends with voluminous facebook posts about life off the grid and stayed active in politics via the internet. She abhorred the prejudice and hate becoming more prevalent in this country and is probably trying to convince super delegates to support Bernie as you read this.

She is survived by a daughter, Val, two wonderful sons, Don and Chris, their lovely wives, Erin and Ashlee, four adorable grandchildren, Ayden, Cassandra, Colven, and Allison, as well as her “adopted” daughter, Nina.

The family would like to thank the staff at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, and Hospice Compassus of Fishers, IN, for their care and compassion during the last few months of Rhondalynn’s life.

At Rhondalynn’s request there will not be a formal memorial service. You can remember her by showing a neighbor, a friend, or a stranger in need a little kindness, especially those who are different from you. The family is accepting donations to offset the costs incurred over the last few months via YouCaring.com: https://www.youcaring.com/rhondalynn-s-family-585979.

The Story

Rhondalynn was medevacced to Phoenix in February after her daughter, Val, noticed she was having severe cognitive impairments and made her call for help. Val, rushed from Guam to be with her, and received the diagnosis - Rhonda's body was riddled with cancer and it was so advanced there was no hope for a cure. A tumor in her kidney had metastasized and spread throughout her body, including her brain. Radiation treatment would minimize the impacts from the brain tumors, the doctors said, but chemo would just prolong her discomfort.

While this was horrible news, it was a blessing in disguise as it allowed Rhondalynn the rare opportunity to prepare for her passing, reevaluate her priorities and spend time with her family, including two new grandchildren. She realized that she could have died alone on her ranch without seeing her youngest grandchildren, without telling her friends and loved ones that she loved them one last time. With the help of her kids and friends, she packed up her beloved Rainbows End Ranch, found homes for all of her animals and moved to Indiana to be with her sons, Don and Chris and their families.

Don found her a great apartment near his home and work, and she settled in hoping for many more months with her family. Things didn't work out exactly as planned, the cognitive impairments returned, she broke her leg, and her cancer progressed so much faster than anyone predicted.

She was frustrated about the burden she placed on her kids, no matter their protestations, and she was upset that she hadn't found a way to cover the expenses for her medical care and the move. She did not want a formal memorial service, and asked that in lieu of flowers, that friends help defray the costs of her illness and passing. We've established this account to facilitate that wish.

Donations will be used to cover the costs incurred by her children during her care over the past few months and funeral expenses. The total is about $8,000. Any remaining funds will be set aside for her four grandchildren.
