Mabel Dorothy was born on July 8th, 1921 in Evansville, Vanderburgh, Indiana. aughter of Charles Franklin and Ivory Dorothy Anderson Powell. She was the middling of her siblings. In the early 1930's her family moved to Chicago where she went to Waller High School and soon graduated. She soon met a local Coast Guardsmen, William Harold Ross. They married on January 1st 1942 at 2 o'clock at the bride's parent's home. Rev. Robert McDill, pastor of LaSalle Street Baptist Church, performed the service. There were a number of guests such as Miss Elizabeth Powell and Ellsworth Powell, sister and brother of the bride. Mabel wore a two-piece street length dress of light-beige. After the wedding a dinner banquet was held at her parent's home on LaSalle Street. Afterwards she took on a job employed in the Chicago offices of Montgomery Ward and Company. Her husband, William Harold Ross, was a graduate of Meadville High School and holds the rating of boatswain's mate first class with the U. S. Coastguard, in which he enlisted in October, 1940. In 1945 William and Mabel had their first and only child, Ivory Doll Ross, born April 1st, 1945 in Chicago; she weighed only 6 lbs. 12 ounces. She then moved onto to Galion, Marion, Ohio sometime in the early 1960's. On November 11th, 1974 Mabel was riding in a Mercury Cougar, down the street. Ivory Doll Ross, her daughter was driving. Road conditions were bad due to rain and weather. Down the road a flat bed truck pulled out onto the street. The car's brakes failed and the car slid right under the flat bed and was crushed. Mabel Dorothy Powell Ross was killed on impact. While her daughter was severely injured, but survived. Services were held on Thursday, November 14th, 1974 at 1:30 in the afternoon. They were held at the Snyder Funeral Home on 318 Mount Vernon Avenue in Marion, Ohio. Rev. M.E. Hollensen was the Clergyman officiating. Her funeral card read:

The lord is my shepard; I shall not want, he maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for art thou with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence before my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of life; And I will dwell in the house of the lord forever.....
