(Johann) Gerhard was born in Moese, Westphalia, Prussia (modern-day Germany) to Johann Heinrich Winkelmann and Anna Maria Huecker.

Gerhard immigrated to the United States with his family in 1846, departing the Port of Bremen in August aboard the Elisabeth Denison and arriving at the Port of New Orleans on Dec. 24.

Gerhard was married to Margaretha Bode on May 9, 1961 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, Missouri, and they had two children.

Gerhard's sister Anna Katharina was also married to Margaretha's cousin Wilhelm Friedrich.
