Birth: Jul. 28, 1907
Death: Jun. 5, 1939

Full-blood Azorean Island descendant: Also known as "Carlos Caetano" on old Provincetown, Massachusetts records.

The second of five children born to William "Willie" Caton and Mary daLuiz Cabral Caton, in Provincetown, Barnstable County, Mass. Charles' mother immigrated from Santa Maria Isle, Azores, Portugal, between 1902 and 1906.

Provincetown recorder entered his birth record in Portuguese: "Carlos Caetano, born (baptized) July 31 1907 or 1909 parents Gerurlherme (William) Caetano and Maria da Luiz Caetano of Ste. Maria Is"

When his mother died around 1918 in an influenza epidemic, his father had to send the children away, because his job as a Cape Cod fisherman took him away regularly. Charlie and his brother James were sent to live in Dedham, Mass., at the home of their aunt, Emma Caton Flint and husband. His grandmother, Ida Silva Caton, also lived in the Flint home by that time, as his grandfather, Manuel R. Caton, had been lost at sea by then.

Charlie served in US Coast Guard, stationed out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. About 3 years after saving a fellow Guardsman's life in a boat explosion which did extensive damage to his lungs, he died in the home where he'd been a boarder for years, at #8 Staten Street in Gloucester. He died of lung complications from an infection he caught, working in a fish processing plant.

Dear Great Uncle Charles ~ You are especially in my thoughts on this 2013 Memorial Day weekend. Your risk and sacrifice to save a fellow Coast Guardsman will not be forgotten.
