Born Donald Ray Hardeman, he attended Killeen High School in Texas and played collegiate football at Texas A&M-Kingsville. While with the Javelinas, he received team MVP honors in 1974. Selected by Houston during the 1st round of the 1975 NFL Draft, he totaled 64 career regular season games. In 1975, he produced a career-high 648 rushing yards with 5 touchdowns. He compiled 1,460 career rushing yards with 11 touchdowns. After retiring from football, he worked for Coors and Anheuser-Busch.
