Robert was the youngest child of William Walker Barnes (1851-1932) and Lizzie Ellen Miller Barnes (died 1893) who are also buried in this cemetery. William Walker Barnes was a son of Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell Barnes (1814-1896).
Robert was married in about 1907 to Susie B. Shacklett.
Shortly after Robert and Susie were married they lived in Indiana, but soon returned to Kentucky where Robert worked as a farm hand. Robert and Susie later bought their own farm where they resided for many years. Their daughter Frances states that their farm was about 200 acres in size and was located on Big Spring Road, about 4-5 miles from the town of Big Spring located in Meade County, Kentucky. The farm had milk cows, hogs, chickens and sheep, which Robert would shear and sell the wool. No one else in the immediate area had sheep. Before winter arrived, Robert would butcher about 7 hogs, which would supply the family with meat for a long time. They raised corn, hay, and always had a big tobacco patch. Robert used horses for their farming and never owned a tractor. Frances said they didn't have much else, but the family always had plenty of food to eat. The 2-story farmhouse they lived in is no longer standing. This house had a wood stove in the kitchen for cooking and a wood stove in the living room which was used to heat the house.
After their chidren were grown, Robert and Susie divorced and sold their nice farm. Robert lived alone most of the time after that.
Robert, Susie, and their son William Harry Barnes are buried in the same plot at Buck Grove Cemetery.
