Cardinal Archbishop of Canterbury. Graduated in law at Balliol College, Oxford, and practised ecclesiastical law in London. A supporter of Lancastrians, he was exiled after the Yorkist victory at Towton in 1461, but later made his peace with Edward IV. He became Master of the rolls in 1473, and undertook several diplomatic missions. In 1479 he was made Bishop of Ely and later was an executor of the will of Edward IV. He was arrested by Richard III and imprisoned in the Tower of London but later released into the custody of the Duke of Buckingham. In 1486 he became an Archbishop of Canterbury and a year later, the chancellor. In 1493 he was made a cardinal. (bio by: julia&keld)
