RED OAK YOUTH DIED DURING OFFICER TRAINING EXERCISE
Funeral services for Thomas Randall Draper, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carleton T. Draper of Red Oak, who died while on a conditioning hike during Summer Marine Corps Reserve Officer Training near Quantico, Virginia, July 1, 1968, will be conducted at the First Congregational Church here Tuesday, July 9, at 3:30 p.m. by the Rev. W. Phil Gruenke and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, with Sellergren Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Randy, who recently completed his sophomore year at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, was a Lance Corporal in the Marine Platoon Leaders Training Course at Camp Upshur near Quantico. He apparently died of heat exhaustion. He was reported missing when he did not return with his platoon from the exercise and the body was found Tuesday morning.
His parents flew to Quantico upon notification of his death by the Marine Corps, accompanied by his fiancee, Claudia Joyce and her mother, Mrs. Wayne Joyce, Red Oak. They returned home with the body along with S. Sgt. Robert Homespun, Marine Corps escort.
Mr. Draper was born December 6, 1947 at Omaha. He was raised in Red Oak and attended grade school here, until the family moved to Blair, Nebraska in July 1955. He lettered in football and track at Blair High School and was in the Boys Glee Club and Mixed Chorus. He was also active in Scouting at Blair achieving the highest rank that of Eagle Scout November 26, 1963, while a member of Troop 143. The family moved back to Red Oak and he completed his senior year at Red Oak Community High School, graduating with the Class of 1966.
He entered in the University of Nebraska September 1966 and planned to begin his junior year in the fall. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity and Semper Fidelis Club at the University. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve, November 20, 1967 and was approved for Platoon Leaders Training Program that required the 6 week summer course at Quantico.
Randy was a member of the First Congregational Church at Blair and Red Oak. He was a Junior Deacon, sang in the church choir, and belonged to the Pilgrim Fellowship youth group at Blair.
Surviving besides his parents are his grandparents, George E. Wood and Mrs. Harry Draper, all of Red Oak.
Following the church services, burial will be conducted with full Military Honors by the U.S. Marine Corps.
The family has expressed desire to establish a perpetual scholarship fund as a memorial to the youth.
