Violinist. Born Mikhail Saulovich, by age 6, he was first in his class at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1904, he made his debut with sensational acclaim in Berlin and in Paris that same year. In 1905, he made his first appearance in London to great acclaim. In 1908, he made his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall New York, as soloist in an extraordinary performance of the Tchaikovsky concerto with Altschuler and the Russian Symphony Orchestra. He was hailed as one of the greatest virtuosos of the time, playing with every major symphony orchestra in America. In the following years, he played all over the world becoming a synonym for violinist prowess. Granted U.S. citizenship in 1923, he performed as many as 107 concerts in a 29-week season to fill popular demand. He published many violin arrangements of Classical and Romantic pieces and composed playable short compositions for his instrument. Regarded as one of the foremost violinists of the 20th century, he continued to perform, record and teach until his death.
