Considered the greatest male ballet dancer of his generation, his talent was promoted at age 8, when his mother took him to Paris to study. By age 14, he was lead dancer with the René Blum's de Monte Carlo, performing in Europe and London. In 1937, he came to America and became premier danseur of Balanchine's American Ballet, performing at Radio City Music Hall and on Broadway. In 1939, he joined Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and was the star of the American Ballet Theatre until 1946. He became premier danseur of the Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo in 1947 and from 1951 to 1958, he was the principal dancer of the New York City Ballet touring the states. After retiring in 1961, he founded the Eglevsky Ballet Company, New York. His Ballet Company and school has remained a premier professional dance education center for over four decades.
