He served as acting President of South Korea from October 1979 to August 1980, following the assassination of President Park Chung-hee. Kyu-ha was elected as the nation's fourth President in December 1979. He was removed from office eight months later following a military coup led by Chun Doo-hwan, who succeeded him as the self-appointed leader. Prior to his presidency Kyu-hah served as Foreign Minister from 1967 to 1971, Presidential Security Advisor from 1971 to 1975, and as the nation's Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979.
