BOMOSEEN, Vt. - Mr. Coulman Westcott Jr., 78, died Thursday evening, March 1, 2001, at the Eden Park Nursing Home.

Mr. Westcott was born May 10, 1922, in Mechanicville, New York, the son of the late Coulman and Edna (Blanchard) Westcott of Fair Haven. He graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1940 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1944.

While he was in college, he was in the Navy ROTC program and he was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

He married Daphne Pentel of Troy, N.Y., in May of 1944 in San Diego, California, prior to his shipping out on the Escort Carrier, USS Saginaw Bay, to join the Pacific Fleet. Mr. Westcott participated in battles in Guam, Okinawa and various other islands in the Pacific.

After returning home from the armed forces, he worked for General Electric Corporation as an Aeronautical Engineer and later as a Customer Service Supervisor in their Jet Aircraft Engine Department. During his employment with GE, he and his family moved to Ohio and Massachusetts, and in 1962 he relocated his family to Chatham, N.J.

"Coul" left GE, and joined friends and cousins in the Housing Construction trade. In 1977 he retired for a while and moved to the Pentel Family farm in Averill Park, N.Y., and after he accomplished the restoration of the buildings, he designed solar heating and hydro power for the barn.

He eventually began his third career in the Sand Lake area as the Town Property Assessor and later, as an independent assessor, throughout the Schoharie area. Mr. Westcott served as President of the New York State Assessor's Association from 1992 to 1993.

Coul spent many of his childhood years and vacations at his summer home on Lake Bomoseen. His hobbies and interests in life included skiing, fishing, public speaking, fiction and humor writing, and learning about local history.

He was predeceased by his wife, Daphne (Pentel) Westcott, on April 6, 2000.

There will be no visiting hours.
