FLORENCE - Funeral services for Carl Ray Smith will be conducted at the graveside at Mount Hope Cemetery at noon Friday by the Rev. Dr. Edward L. Byrd. Burial will be directed by Waters Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith, 85, died Wednesday at his home after a short illness. He was first married to the late Mrs. Hallie J. Carrison Smith of Camden. His second marriage was to Mrs. Sarah Carter Gill Smith formerly of Chester and who survives.
Mr. Smith was born in Timmonsville, a son of the late Charles A. and Fannie Byrd Smith. He was a retired merchant, automobile dealer and farmer. He came to Florence in 1924 where he had made his home since that time. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a former deacon, a former Sunday school superintendent, secretary and treasurer of the Sunday school class. He was a member and past president of the Florence Rotary Club, former trustee of Furman University and Coker College. He was a 1906 graduate of Wake Forest College.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Smith Campbell of Spartanburg and Mrs. H. Kirby (Frances) Ellis of Florence; a son, Capt. C. Ray Smith, Jr. of the US Navy of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Francis Pepper of Winston-Salem, NC and Mrs. Henry Lucius of Greenville; two brothers, Dr. Hugh Smith of Greenville and Capt. F. Donald Smith, Us Navy, retired, of Cornado, Calif.; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
