Trooper Mark Wilson, soldier with the Royal Canadian Dragoons based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 39, he was a native of London, Ontario. Survived by his wife Dawn; sons Joshua and Benjamin; parents Carl and Carolyn Wilson; two brothers and a sister; and a large extended family. He is remembered as a brave soldier, an avid outdoorsman and a loving father.
He was killed when the Nyala RG-31 armoured vehicle in he was travelling was hit by a roadside bomb in the Panjwayi area, approximately 25 km west of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Trooper Wilson was the gunner and responsible for operating a machine-gun remotely from inside the vehicle. Video from the scene showed the Nyala being towed away with a wheel missing. Otherwise, the vehicle appeared to be largely intact and no other soldiers were injured in the blast.
Trooper Wilson was the third soldier from his unit to die in one week and the 40th Canadian military death in Afghanistan since 2002.
Funeral Mass held at Mary Immaculate Church in London on October 16, 2006.
