Jacob Winans was born in Middle Smithfield (Stroudsberg), Monroe Co., PA the son of James and Hannah Bunnell Winans.
Jacob served in the Ohio Militia during the War of 1812.
His first wife was Eleanor Daugherty whom he married August 27, 1813. She died in 1829. Jacob married Elizabeth "Betsey" McAdams Oct 31, 1830 in Milton, Twp., OH.
Jacob had five children by his first marriage: Josiah, Eleanor, Nancy, Clark, Sarah, and Clarissa; and two by his second: Mary Jane and James Jacob.
Jacob died in Milton Twp., Mahoning Co., OH when his youngest child, James Jacob was less than a year old.
"Jacob Winans, the father, was an industrious farmer and also a patriot who, like others of a like tendency, offered his services during the war of 1812. He was enrolled as a member of the company commanded by Captains Dull and Vannatti, of the Ohio militia. He died in September, 1839, and his wife by second marriage resided with James J. until her death in 1880. For the last two years of her life she enjoyed a pension granted her in consideration of her husband's services in the war of 1812. There were five children by the first marriage and two by the second."
