Joseph was born in Prussia in 1827. He came to America somewhere between 1852 and 1854. His occupation is listed as laborer or farmer. He married Madeleine Bussinger around 1856 in Canada. They moved to Buffalo, NY around 1858. They had four children Theresia, Appolonia, John and August. On 31-Jan-1862 Joseph joined the New York 49th Infintry, Company F of the Union Army. He was wounded on 17-Apr-1862 at the Battle of Yorktown, Va. In Oct-1862 Joseph left Buffalo and never returned. On 20-Jun-1874 Joseph marries Almira Bedee in Ottowa, Ohio. She died in August of 1874. Joseph then married Margaret Mattis Lightener on 19-Oct-1874 in Port Clinton, Ottowa County, Ohio. In 1880 they reside in Huron township, Erie County, Ohio. They have four children; Annie, Maggie, Louis, and John. (There name is spelled either Wheeler or Willer). Joseph died on 30-May-1890. He is buried in McMillan Cemetery, in Huron Township, Erie County, Ohio. There is no marker.
