Wayne F. Jochum, 66, of 702 Ries St., died at 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Monsignor Neil Tobin officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m. and where the Dubuque County Firefighters Association will meet at 7 p.m.
Mr. Jochum joined the Dubuque Fire Department in 1962, eventually achieving the position of City Fire Marshal, from which rank he retired in 1996. Following his retirement from the city, he worked as a courier for Dubuque Bank & Trust, prior to his final retirement in 2006.
He was born on May 26, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Francis "Scoop" and Leona (Maiers) Jochum. He married DeLee M. Strohmeyer on April 8, 1961, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. Wayne was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Dubuque County Firefighters Association, Iowa Association of Professional Firefighters, and the Moose Lodge. He was an original inductee into the Dubuque County Firefighters Hall of Flame.
Wayne enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid fisherman and camper. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and cheering them on in athletics and other activities.
Surviving are his wife DeLee, of Dubuque; five children, Jeff (Judy) Jochum, Wendy (Troy) Lampers, Jayne (Paul) Lynch, and Lori Jochum (friend, Randy Oltmanns), all of Dubuque, and Don (Beth) Jochum, of Rochester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Samantha and Dan Lampers, Jordan, Haley and Ashley Jochum, Cody Krug, Michael Lynch, Emily Fink, Ryan Jochum and Randa Oltmanns; two brothers, Robert (Lynn) Jochum, and Gary (Donna) Jochum; six sisters, Jean (Jerry) Meyer, Dorothy Reed, Pat Schumacher, Joan Wagner, and Carol (Dave) Thul, all of Dubuque, and Leone (George) Reed, of Burbank, Wash.; two brothers-in-law, David (Judi) Strohmeyer of Berlin, Wis., and Dale (Rosie) Strohmeyer, of Plano, Texas; his mother-in-law, Grace Strohmeyer, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald Jochum, in infancy, and Kenneth Neely; his sister, Mary F. Fransen; and three brothers-in-law, Lyle "PeeWee" Reed, David Schumacher, and William Fransen.
