Son of George Rushton Howell, II & Carolyn F. Howell.

George served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-17F #42-30398, 429th Bomber Squadron, 2nd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Delaware County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 12, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-30398 took off from Massicault, Tunisia on a bombing mission over Turin, Italy, After completing their bombing mission they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which damaged the No. 3 engine causing a fire which spread to the tail section. They crash near Genoa, Italy during the war. Parachutes were seen coming from the B-17.

George was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was first interred in an American Cemetery near Florence, Italy. After 5 years of correspondence, and searches aided by dental records, his remains were identified and finally returned to the United States.

George was repatriated here in his family's plot at the Washington Memorial Chapel Cemetery in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1949.
