US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of South Dakota's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 1975. He worked as a farmer, prior to beginning his association with law enforcement in 1950, when he was elected Sheriff of Day County, South Dakota. After attaining his Law degree from the University of South Dakota, he served as an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and in 1962, he commenced practicing Law in Brookings, South Dakota. During his tenure in Congress, he prioritized efforts for non-urban issues and fought against President Nixon's attempt to eliminate the Depression Era Rural Electrification Act. He lost his Congressional seat to Vietnam veteran Larry Pressler. After leaving Washington, he resumed practicing Law.
