Jerry M. Mitchell, age 75, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Tidewell Hospice House in Bradenton.
Born July 13, 1940 in Dunedin, FL, Mr. Mitchell was a resident of Bartow area since 1955, moving from New Port Richey, FL. He was a Grower & Broker in the Citrus Industry for many years. He was a member of Bartow Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where is served as a deacon and choir member. He was a graduate of Summerlin Institute and the Citadel Military College.
While a cadet at The Citadel, he was known by his classmates and friends as "Mitch". He was a member of Kilo Company and was a cadet Captain his senior year. He was a member of the Junior Sword Drill, the Bond Volunteers, the Summerall Guards (Rear Guide), the Association of The United States Army, the American Ordnance Association, the Central Florida Citadel Club, the Yacht Club and the Methodist Club. He was of the protestant faith and served as a Chapel usher. He attended The Citadel from Bartow, Fla. He graduated with a Business Administration degree and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army
He was a Vietnam Army veteran. He was a past president of the Peace River Country Club, former Board Chairman of the Bartow Memorial Hospital, Past President of the Bartow Rotary Club, Past Commander Mulberry American Legion Post #72 and Past Area Legion Commander.
He is survived by his daughter: Ashley M. Marston (Heath), Bradenton; son: Travis Mitchell (Lisa), Bartow; brother, Roy Dan Mitchell, Alturas; two sisters: Lynette Phillips, Bradenton and Beverly S. Mitchell, Bartow and six grandchildren.
Family will receive friends Monday, April 4, 2016 from 3:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 205 E. Stanford St, Bartow. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 P.M. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL, 34238 or Bartow Public Library, 2150 S. Broadway Ave, Bartow 33830.
