The Rev. Ira C. Estes


The death of the Rev. Ira C. Estes, a native of Garrattsville, occurred at Syracuse Wednesday, Feburary 19th, while shoveling snow. he was born at Garrattsville in 1856, the son of THomas and Irene (Cone) Estes. His wife, who passed away in 1926, was Miss Agnes Renwick of Garrattsville. Six children survive, Mrs. Norma Douglas and Miss Mary Estes of Syracuse, with whom he resided; James Estes of Rochester, Mrs. Charles Lovewell of Butte, Mont.; Mrs. Robert Conklin of new Jersey, Mrs. Sarah Near of Schenevus.


Mr. Estes spent his early life working on a farm at Garrattsville, where he also taught school for several years. Later he studied for the Methodist ministry and served pastorates at Schenevus, hartford, North Fenton, Vestal, McDonough and Damascus, Pa., before going to Syracuse where he preached until retiring. The body will be brought to the Butternut Valley cemetery at Brick School House for burial, in the spring.
