Elmo D. Ruyle
(March 4, 1938 - April 2, 2016)
Elmo Dean Ruyle was born on March 4, 1938 near Canute, Oklahoma to Verne Arden and Martha Francis (Wheeler) Ruyle. He grew up on the farm a few miles from Butler, Oklahoma with his four siblings. Elmo spent his childhood in the cotton patch and milking cows as well as the many other chores of being a farm boy. Went to school at Stafford grade and High School, at Stafford Oklahoma, receiving his high school diploma in 1956.

Taking a year off, Elmo traveled to Washington and worked in a sawmill. Returning home, he attended North West Oklahoma State University in Alva and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1960.

Elmo married the love of his life, Velda Faye Butler on September 2, 1960 in Enid, Oklahoma. Making their home on a farm in Stafford, he taught a year at the same school he attended all those years. They then moved to Bessie, Oklahoma where he worked as the school principal. This is also where they started adding the joy of children to the home.

In 1964, the family moved to Attica, Kansas and the family continued to grow. The Ruyles were blessed with four children: Sherry, Larry, Kevin, and Robin. Elmo continued as an educator for the junior high in Attica, teaching History and English as well as being a coach. Not taking his summers off, Elmo would work for the local grain elevator.

Moving just outside of Attica in 1969, they rented a farm. Then the next year Elmo left the school and started working in sales. Making one last move, they bought a farm in 1971 southeast of the Crystal Springs area and that became their permanent home. Elmo’s job in sales had a vast variety where he could sell anything to anybody, as long as he believed in the product himself. He excelled in this career until he retired in 1992. This retirement only meant he didn’t work for someone else anymore. The farm kept him busy baling hay and tending the animals. From this he never retired.

On April 2, 2016, Elmo passed away at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 78 years and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three siblings: Edwin Ruyle, Billie Ruyle, and Bonita Hopkins.

Elmo will be dearly missed by his wife, Velda of the home; daughter, Sherry Dierksen of Medicine Lodge; son, Larry Ruyle of rural Harper; son, Kevin and his wife, Tina of Mulvane; daughter, Robin Dick and her husband, Jared of Wellington; grandchildren: Darryl Dierksen, Dr. E. Dean Dierksen and his wife, Felicia, Stephanie Voth and her husband, Evan, Devin Ruyle, and Megan Ruyle; great-grandchildren: Matthew Dean Voth and Jaxon Wayne Dierksen; brother, Donnie Ruyle and his wife, Sandy of Burlington, Washington; other relatives and many friends.
