English Actor. Wilmer was a character actor of stage, screen and television who will best be remembered for playing Sherlock Holmes in the 1964-1965 BBC-TV series 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes'. He was studying as an actor at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London when he enlisted into the British Army for military service with the Royal Artillery during World War II. In 1945, he made his stage debut in repertory theater, appearing frequently on the London stage, mainly in classical and Shakespearean roles. In 1955, he made his first film appearance in Laurence Olivier's 'Richard III', and would go on to land supporting roles in such films as 'The Battle of the River Plate' (1956), 'El Cid' (1961), 'Cleopatra' (1963), 'Jason and the Argonauts' (1963), 'A Shot in the Dark' (1964), 'Khartoum' (1966), 'The Vengeance of Fu Manchu' (1967), 'The Reckoning' (1969), 'Patton' (1970), 'Antony and Cleopatra' (1972), 'The Golden Voyage of Sinbad' (1973), 'Revenge of the Pink Panther' (1978), 'Octopussy' (1983) and 'Sword of the Valiant'. (1984). On TV, aside from 'Sherlock Holmes', he appeared in dozens of series and made-for-TV-movies such as 'Sacrifice to the Wind', 'The Adventures of Robin Hood', 'St. Ives', 'The Count of Monte Cristo', 'The Black Tulip', 'Nicholas Nickleby', 'Macbeth', 'The Avengers', 'Gazette', 'Love Story' and 'Blind Justice'. Wilmer passed away after a short illness.
