(NOTE: David H. Anderson probably never sat for a portrait prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. However, during the 10 months he was stationed in and around Nashville, Tennessee in 1862 and 1863, like most of the boys, he almost certainly sat for a portrait,which came in one of two forms. There were the older style which were referred to as "tin types" and then there was a new fangled process of paper picture, which was called a "CDV". A CDV was a paper picture glued to a heavier cardboard material about the size of a modern day baseball card and the boys usually had many copies made, not only to send home to their loved ones, but also to swap among their messmates and tentmates.
David then survived the war and lived into the 20th century. During the years after the war, David probably had his picture taken dozens and dozens of times. I would love to see a copy of his CDV or tin type, if he had one made, be added to his Find A Grave Memorial. However, at this point, I would just be thrilled to see ANY pictures of him, even ones of him as an older man. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Baxter)

They are known to have had at least two sons. David the father and Mary Jane and her two little boys are buried in Pleasant Grove cemetery just outside Trivoli. There is a relatively new, very nice gravestone for David and Mary Jane. As I stood looking at it, I felt something hard under my feet so I pulled aside the grass and started digging and found a very old tombstone, broken in two that listed the two little boys. On the afternoon of August 15th, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers, including now Private David H. Anderson, were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come.
After the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the Confederates withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where the 86th would go into winter camp. The men of the 86th would remain in the Nashville area through the spring and summer of 1863.
During the next two years, Private David H. Anderson served faithfully in Co. D as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, David was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averasboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, to name a few, and marched with Sherman to the Sea.
After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Briagde marched on to Washington, D.C. where on the 24th day of May, 1865, they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. on the 2nd day of the Grand Review. The surviving members of the 86th were finally mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 in Washington and soon they were on a train bound for Chicago where they received their final pay and were discharged. By the end of June of 1865, the surviving members of the 86th were back with the families in Central Illinois.

On July 8, 1870 David and his family are shown in the 1870 census in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois. His occupation is teamster. Besides David there is:

David H. Anderson died on July 5, 1902 in the city of Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois and his mortal remains were returned to Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, where they were laid to rest in the Henry city cemetery. The Thursday, July 10, 1902 edition of THE HENRY REPUBLICAN newspaper, of Henry, Illinois carried the following obituary;
"DAVID H. ANDERSON
Another former resident has passed away and his remains brought to Henry for interment. D. H. Anderson, who was a resident for many years, but who has lived in Peoria since 1892, died in that city on Saturday last. He sustained a stroke of paralysis some three years of so ago, since which time he has been almost helpless and much of the prostrate, a patient sufferer until the change came.
David Hamilton Anderson was born in West Virginia, August 24, 1837. He came to Illinois in 1857, and later found a life companion in Miss Sarah Amanda Veeder, the marriage taking place at Wyoming, Ill. Jan. 3, 1862. This union was blessed with five children, the widow and three children surviving - (Claudia, Mrs. Tim Wood Jr., of Henry; Walter, of Denver, Colo.; and Willard, who resides at home.
His residence in Henry dates to 1870, where he opened a restaurant, afterwards a wood and coalyard, etc. At Peoria he engaged in the upholster business with son, Willard, and also was the inventor of a door spring which had a large sale for a time.
He was a soldier of the civil war, a member of Co. D, 86th Ill., enlisted in 1862 and serving three years. Mr. Anderson was quite compassionable, a pusher in whatever he undertook, had a large acquiantance and many friends. He was a member of the G. A. R. and held a policy in the Woodmen of $2000, which will be paid to the widow. He also drew a pension from the government, a solace indeed to the brave soldier in his long wasting sickness.
The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church in Henry, Rev. R. L. Campbell officiating. The floral tributes were elegant. The pall bearers were from the two orders - G. A. R. and Woodmen - J. A. Melick, Wm. German and A. Daniels, of the G. A. R. and A. V. Goltra, F. A. Raymond and Jacob Noil from the Woodmen. Both orders participated in the rites at the grave."

At the time of the 1910 census, Sarah resides at 264 Armstrong Avenue in Peoria, Illinois with her son, Willard. The date of April 26, 1910 is given in the Transcribers Notes in the census for Sarah. It is not known for certain what this date is, but, it may be the date she was widowed, that David H. Anderson died;

ANDERSON, DAVID H., CIVIL, Co. D, 86 IL INF, Vol 2, Page 345, PEORIA CO., SPRINGDALE Cemetery

David H. Anderson is not listed as being buried in Springdale Cemetery in the 1956 Illinois Honor Roll.

I have never been able to find anything about David H. Anderson being buried in Springdale Cemetery and neither has any Find A Grave volunteer. However, David H. Anderson does have a marker in the Henry Cemetery in Henry, Illinois in Marshall County and I believe this is where he is actully buried.

Sarah Amanda Anderson is believed to have died in Peoria in 1922 and her earthly remains were buried in the Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, Illinois which made me wonder if there was ever even a marker for David H. Anderson in Springdale Cemetery, but has never been located. I still wonder where that 1929 information came from.

David H. Anderson died on July 5, 1902 in the city of Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois and his mortal remains were returned to Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, where they were laid to rest in the Henry city cemetery. The Thursday, July 10, 1902 edition of THE HENRY REPUBLICAN newspaper, of Henry, Illinois carried the following obituary;
"DAVID H.

At the time of the 1910 census, Sarah resides at 264 Armstrong Avenue in Peoria, Illinois with her son, Willard. The date of April 26, 1910 is given in the Transcribers Notes in the census for Sarah. It is not known for certain what this date is, but, it may be the date she was widowed, that David H. Anderson died;

The database for the 1929 Roll of Honor lists the following information about David H. Anderson;
ANDERSON, DAVID H., CIVIL, Co. D, 86 IL INF, Vol. 2, Page 233, MARSHALL Co., HENRY Cemetery

(Baxter would love to hear from anyone, especially descendants of the Anderson family, who might be able to add to the biographical material that we have on David H. Anderson and the Anderson family. Baxter would also love to see copies of any photographs of David H. Anderson that may have survived the years, especially any showing him in uniform from his days in the service, added to his Find A Grave site for all to see.)
