American painter who specialized in miniature portraits. Self-taught from an early age, she took lessons when she moved to Boston in 1820. She opened a studio about 1820 and listed herself in the Boston directory. Her work spans from about 1815 to 1850, and her preferred medium was watercolor on ivory. She retired in 1851 due to her failing eyesight.

She received commissions to painted many illustrious figures of society from politician such as Daniel Webster to wealthy merchants, from fellow artist Gilbert Stuart to members of her extended family. The portraits radiate a translucency, intimacy and realistic vividness that makes her work truly remarkable.

One of her most famous pieces is now referred to as Beauty Revealed, a miniature portrait of her breasts which she gifted to Daniel Webster.
