He was the son of Jacob Ayers Sanders and Mary DeBerry.
Andrew's father was a shoemaker, so he was put to that trade at age 13, taking his seat just before President Harrison took his. His school advantages were limited, he received most of his education by reading whatever book he could obtain. When he was eighteen years old his father moved to the country, where he farmed until his twenty-third year, when, being married, he immigrated to the State of Iowa in 1850. He settled on a farm in Danville Township, Des Moines Co., where he remained about 24 years, when moved to Deep River Twp, Poweshiek Co. February 24, 1875. He married Phebe Baldwin of Washington Co. PA, May 29, 1849, she died May 12, 1851, leaving no issue. He married Mary Clendaniel Yoders of Amity, PA Dec 25, 1852. He owns 160 acres of good land, is a prosperous farmer, is president of the board of school directors, road supervisor and postmaster of Tilton. (Ref. Poweshiek County History, 1880.)
He was father to eight children; Lawson, Frank, Charles, Harlan, Mary, Newton, Homer and Horace.
