Roger Maris
Birth: Sep. 10, 1934
Death: Dec. 14, 1985

Major League Baseball Player. Roger Maris was born in Hibbing, Minnesota the son of first generation Croatian Americans. He was a product of summer American Legion baseball in the Fargo area of the state. The summer of 1953 saw him voted American Legion player of the year. Maris signed with the Cleveland Indians who assigned him to his home area team of The Fargo Moorhead Twins. Cleveland called him up in 1957 and traded him to Kansas City who promptly sent him to the Yankees. In 1961, he hit 61 home runs breaking the Legendary record held by Babe Ruth. The Yankees sent him to St. Louis in 1966, where he played two seasons before retiring in 1968 and settled in Gainesville, Florida where he ran a beer distributorship. In 1985, inflicted with the late stages of cancer he died at the young age of 51. Roger Maris was returned to Fargo. The Yankees were brought together again: Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, John Blanchard, Bill Skowron, Bob Allison and Whitey Herzog were bearers. After a mass at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Fargo conducted by Bishop James S. Sullivan, Roger was taken to Holy Cross Cemetery for burial. On December 23, 1985, the people of New York said goodbye at a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral conducted by John Cardinal O'Connor. In attendance was President Richard Nixon, Mayor Edward Koch and many baseball figures mixed in with the crowd of 2,500. (Bio by John R. Bacak)
