Matthew Wilhelm, son of Chuck and Gloria Wilhelm, was a gifted and talented scholar who recieved perfect grades at University Laboratory High School in Urbana and as an undergraduate in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received a master's degree in mechanical engineering from UIUC in May 2006 and was looking forward to beginning his new job with Caterpillar. Among his many accomplishments, he was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma, as well as the Senior 100 Honorary and was named a Bronze Tablet scholar. He was a Chancellor's Scholar, a James Scholar, and on the Dean's List. He received the ASME Outstanding Junior Award, the department's H.H. Korst Award for scholarship in thermal sciences, and the Clarence L. and Harriette Johnson Award as one of the department's best undergraduate students. As a graduate student he held an FMC Fellowship.He was very involved with Campus Crusade for Christ and other social organizations on campus.
While biking on Illinois 130 on September 2, 2006, he was hit by a 19-year old motorist who was downloading ringtones on a cell phone while driving. Despite wearing a helmet, Matt never regained consciousness. He passed away six days later, one day before his brother Jeff's wedding.
Over the course of the next year, Matthew's parents worked with state legislators to address the issue of distracted driving. On August 21, 2007, Governor Rod Blagojevich signed into effect a bill that requires schools to teach the dangers of driving while distracted in drivers' education programs.
