Author. Born in Metz, France, he won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1959 for his book "Le Dernier des Justes", about the history of a Jewish family from the First Crusade to Auschwitz. During World War II he joined the French Resistance; after the war he learned that his family had been murdered in the Nazi death camps. He is also remembered for his books written along with his wife, such as "Un Plat de Porc Avec Bananes Vertes", "Hommage à la Femme", and "La Mulâtresse Solitude." He died after a heart surgery.
