Ernestine "Ernie" Bayer
Birth: Mar. 25, 1909
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Sep. 10, 2006

Rowing Pioneer. She is regarded as the "Mother of American Women's Rowing," who continued to row into her 90's. Her life passion for the sport began when she met future husband Ernest, who won a silver medal at the 1928 Olympics, in the four-oared shell without coxswain. Not satisfied watching her husband row in world-class races, she started the first women's rowing club in 1938, called the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club. She encouraged other women to row and by the 1960's women athletes were competing in international regattas. In 1976, she was chosen to be a member of the first U.S. Olympic women's rowing committee and in 2000 at age 91, she rowed in the Master's World Championships, winning the women's double. She was the first woman named to the National Rowing Foundation's Hall of Fame, to receive the U.S. Rowing Medal, to win the U.S. Rowing's Carlin Award for service to the sport, be nominated for the Sullivan Award and was named one of the sport's Ten Most Influential People of the Century. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
