| Birth: | 1844 Dayton Montgomery County Ohio, USA | | Death: | Dec. 28, 1913 Dayton Montgomery County Ohio, USA | Inventor. A skilled mechanic, he built the first practical cash register with the help of his brother James, and patented the design in 1879 as "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier". The Ritty brothers opened a small factory in Dayton to manufacture cash registers. The company did not prosper and was sold to a group of investors including Jacob H. Eckert of Cincinnati, a china and glassware salesman who formed the National Manufacturing Company, and John and Frank Patterson, who were then in the coal and railroad business Among other things, he patented several machines for the hulling of green corn and set up a canning factory in which they were used. He also operated a restaurant and cafe. There is a story, still current in Dayton, that his ingenuity was revealed in a unique device. He piped water to all the tables in his restaurant and used the water power to operate motors which rotated palm leaf fans for the comfort of his patrons in hot weather. (bio by: Helen L. Smith Hoke)
