Herman Ohmstede Resident of Knightsen Herman Ohmstede died peacefully on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, four days after his 96th birthday. He was born in Knightsen, California to Sophie and Fredrich Ohmstede, and was the youngest of seven children. He attended Knightsen Elementary, and Liberty Union High School where he met his future wife, Marian Ghigliazza. They were married on May 23, 1938 in Reno, Nevada. He and his brother Fritz owned and operated the Ohmstede's Store in Knightsen. In later years, he worked for East Contra Costa Irrigation District, retiring in 1976. He married Gina Dawson in 1970. He will be remembered as an honorable man who delighted in sharing stories of family history. He enjoyed spending time at the beach in Santa Cruz as well as tending to his garden and ranch in Knightsen; he was especially fond of his sweet pea flowers and irises. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marian, his son Lynn, and his second wife Gina. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Sanchez; four grandchildren, Steven Ohmstede (Kim, wife), Susan Mayberry (Bob, husband), Jennifer Durnell (Matt, husband), and Michael Sanchez; seven great- grandchildren, Andrew, Ava, Jack, Bryan, Darren, Kristy, and Becky; and seven great-great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 10 AM at the Brentwood Funeral Home, followed by a burial service at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Sutter VNA & Hospice, 4071 Port Chicago Hwy, Suite 120, Concord, CA 94520-1197.
