Renfrewshire, Scotland
Death: 1842
Craigville

US Congressman. Born in Paisley, Scotland, he moved to the United States with his family in 1790. He inherited several business ventures from his father, which he expanded to include farms and paper, grist and saw mills, eventually giving rise to the Village of Craigville. Craig was a founder and Recording Secretary of the Orange County Agricultural Society. He was elected to Congress as a Jacksonian in 1822 and served one term, 1823 to 1825. Craig was elected to the US House for the second time in 1828 and served from March 1829 until he resigned in July 1830 to accept the position of Surveyor and Inspector of the Port of New York. In 1832 he was appointed US Commissioner of Insolvency, and he served as US Surveyor of Customs in New York from 1833 to 1839. His son in law William F. Havemeyer (1804-1874) served three times as Mayor of New York City. (bio by: Bill McKern)
