Capt William Thomas Turner
Birth: Oct. 23, 1856
Death: Jun. 23, 1933

Maritime Folk Legend. Born in Liverpool England, he was from a family of mariners and went to sea at age eight, as a cabin boy. Through skill, knowledge of the sea and favor of royalties, he gained his Captain's certificate in 1886 and the rank of Commander in the Royal Navy Reserve in 1913. He is most remembered for his roll as Captain of the RMS Lusitania on the fateful night of May 7, 1915, when she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat and sunk off the coast of Ireland. The ship's sinking was surrounded with controversy that led to an investigation and the entry of the United States and other countries into World War I. Even though the Admiralty's court of inquire blamed him with negligence by failing to zig-zag the ship in the incident, he was found innocent of any improper action. He continued in the service of the Royal Navy, retiring after the war but never forgave the Admiralty for its allegations. Living in recluse, the loss of the Lusitania haunted him for the rest of his life. He died of cancer. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
