Swedish prince. At birth he was Prince of Sweden and (until 1905) of Norway, in the Bernadotte Dynasty, and Duke of Gotland. He was widely known for his religious involvement and advocacy, and for leading related organizations such as the Swedish WMCA. With 25 years in the Swedish Navy he reached the rank of Vice Admiral. In 1888, against the wishes of his father King Oscar II and the Swedish government, he married a noblewoman and forfeited his Swedish royal titles and eligibility to inherit the throne. He was then given an unspecified title by his father and was called Prince Oscar Bernadotte in Sweden. He was also more officially granted that personal title in the nobility of Luxembourg, plus the hereditary title of Count of Wisborg, by his maternal uncle, Grand Duke Adolph in 1892. His wife was included in these titles. Wisborg alluded to his former Gotland title and the ruins of an ancient castle there in Visby. In Sweden, the special surname Bernadotte af Wisborg also was approved by that country's king and has been used by a few descendants. For the rest of his lifetime, he was not considered Swedish royalty, but after death he is so, as per standard historical practice (see for example Edward VIII of England). He died at his Malmsjö Estate in Grödinge.
