Joe Walker Belote Jr., 85, died June 14, 2006. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 17, 2006, in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel, with the Rev. Steven Campbell officiating. Burial followed at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Mr. Belote was born Oct. 4, 1920, in Paducah, to Joe Sr. and Faye Backus Belote. He grew up and went to school in Paducah. He attended the University of Texas for one year before joining the Army Air Corps. He served in World War II in the Pacific Islands on an aircraft repair ship. He married Ora Mae Owens on April 19, 1944. She preceded him in death on Nov. 14, 1998. After his discharge, he returned to school at Hardin Simmons University and later attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., where he earned his doctorate in optometry. He practiced in Slaton for 18 years before moving to Lubbock. He moved his practice to Lubbock in 1968 and retired in 1995. He married Doris Moody on May 11, 2002, in Stephenville.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Belote of Graham; one son, Bill and wife Pat Belote of Saratoga, Calif.; one daughter, Betty Scott and husband Joe of Slaton; three grandchildren; Thomas Belote and wife Sara of Moscow, Idaho, Brooke Gary and husband Heath of Slaton, Lamar Scott of Lubbock; three stepchildren, Norman Musgrave and wife Deborah of Archer City, Debbie Davis and husband Ron of Nesbitt, Miss., Eddie Musgrave and wife Lisa of Port Lavaca; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Slaton Senior Citizens Center, Meals-on-Wheels Fund, 230 W. Lynn St., Slaton, TX 79364.
