Ruth's older siblings were Bertie Lee, a sister who was born in 1910 and did not quite make it to her first birthday, Brady Alvin, Lillie Mae, Amanda Matilda "Mandy", and Jack Taward (originally named Enwie). Her younger siblings were Horace Melvin, Tom Howard, and two infants which died at or within a few days of birth.
Ruth & Donald moved to Mobile and later to Metairie where they made their home for fifty years. They were the parents of three children, Tex, Henry & Norma Ruth Nettles. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Donald, her parents, and all of her siblings. She was survived by her children, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.
Ruth was my favorite aunt. We loved going to visit her and going to Marti Gras, but even more, we loved her coming back to New Brockton, Alabama to visit. She was so kind, so loving, and warm which is why I treasure the photo of her holding me in her lap. I'd have a hard time imagining how one could be a better person than was my Aunt Ruth. What a loss to all was her death on 30 July 2003 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
Per the obituary published on August 5, 2003 in The times-Picayune (New Orleans, LA), she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kenner where services were held at 2 pm Tuesday, August 5, 2003. Burial follwed in the Garden of memories on Airline Highway. The family requested contributions to the church or to the Alzheimer's Association.
